Dubai Lounge
Inquiring minds want to know: why are the clubs so awful in Dubai? It seems that if one is just the slightest bit discerning in one's tastes, you are bound to be disappointed by the throbbing techno beats and drunk Brits and Lebanese you find at the typical Dubai club establishment. Here's a novel idea: how about opening an Ibiza-style lounge with a chill deep house vibe and NO ALCOHOL. It seems one of the main obstacles to Dubai's club scene growing is the assumption that a club or lounge can't be successful without serving drinks. Why not?

It's a great idea, but the amount of teeth-gnashing I hear about the place whenever it's a "dry day" (religious holidays) makes me fear for its success.
What I would absolutely love is more smoke-free venues. Other people's alcohol doesn't really affect me - unless they spill it on me or they drink and drive - but their smoke does.
I think the bigger problem is that there is no real crowd in Dubai.
The nightclubs are filled with tourists and flashy personalities that are only interested in one thing: the bottle service and loud thumping beats (whether they're any good or not).
Only a very small group of people actually go for the music, but the dumb tourist, drunken brit, or champagne guzzling leb eventually drowns the vibe out.
It’s just a shame because the good music that does make its way here comes for the money and not the party. You know Danny Howells isn't giving all he's got on the decks 'cause the crowd is throwing him off.
But what do I care about the scene? As long as everyone ignores Lee Burridge when he comes; I get to say hello and have a cool talk about robot genitalia and the scripted swordplay in the Seven Samurai.
To tie this whole roundabout opinion together, because there’s no scene, I’m of the opinion that a venue without alcohol will not draw the people and not be profitable.
I do hear that ibo does draw in a travelling indie hipster crowd.
I also heard Scorsese was in Dubai last weekend, filming the drunken Bahraini after school football special.
SD: I agree. Even as a "social" smoker I have come to appreciate the smoke-free environment in NYC.
BR: You are correct, a chicken can only hatch from an egg and without the right DJ talent here my vision of sipping mocktails by the Gulf and listening to Cut Copy remixed by Timbaland will never be fulfilled. Regarding Scorsese, you are correct but it is too big to email. How do I get it to you for editing?
I might even be attempted to enter such a club! But like SD says, don't know how well the dry glass will go down with the regular customers.
